The Environment Department has announced that pollution has been detected off the Ayia Varvara beach and is advising the public to avoid swimming in the area until water quality is fully restored.
The service is monitoring the situation in cooperation with competent authorities, while sampling is on-going in collaboration with the Health Services and the General State Laboratory.
The local authority has already been informed.
According to reports, the pollution was probably caused by ship sewage.
A further announcement will be issued following completion of testing and confirmation that the waters are suitable for swimming.
