DEMOISELLE CRANES ARE A 'SWISS WATCH' - THEY PASS BY PAPHOS ON THE SAME DAYS EVERY YEAR

 Pafos Press 30 August 2025

Almost every year, on such days, Paphos has the honour of hosting a unique spectacle of nature: the migratory journey of the Demoiselle cranes (Grus virgo). If you were in a yard, terrace or any outdoor space on Friday evening, you probably heard their characteristic, melodic cry echoing in the sky. Flocks ranging from a few dozen to hundreds of birds would arrive from the north, often in the afternoon hours, to spend the night in the area, before continuing their long journey south the next day. August: the beginning of the autumn migration August is a particularly interesting period for birdwatching in Cyprus, as it marks the beginning of the autumn migration. Millions of birds leave their nesting grounds in Eurasia and pass through our island, on their way to warmer regions of Africa and Asia.

The Demoiselle Crane – An August “exclusive” Among the most impressive species encountered during this period, the demoiselle crane, the smaller relative of the common crane (Grus grus), stands out. With its long black feathers on the chest, narrow tail and different coloration on the head, the demoiselle crane is easily recognized by experienced observers. Above all, however, it stands out for the path it follows: Cyprus is the only country in Europe where this impressive species can be observed in such large numbers. The importance of Cyprus for the species Demoiselle cranes breed from the Black Sea to Mongolia and winter mainly in India and Africa. As they pass through the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus is a crucial stopover and resupply point. Although the species is not considered endangered, large numbers of the European population are recorded every year on the island, especially in Akrotiri, but also in other areas such as Larnaca Salt Flats, Akamas, Paramali, as well as Paphos and its surrounding villages. Where and when to see them The best place to admire the passage of demoiselle cranes is Akrotiri, from mid-August to early September, when flocks of hundreds of birds arrive. At dusk, the skies of Cyprus fill with their special melody, offering an unforgettable experience to those who were lucky enough to experience it.
