CYPRUS RANKS AMONG EU COUNTRIES WITH LOWEST DROWNING DEATHS

 in-cyprus 6 August 2025

Cyprus is among four European Union countries with the lowest number of drowning deaths in 2022, according to Eurostat data. At European level, drowning deaths fell 4% compared to the previous year.

The EU recorded 4,810 deaths from drowning and submersion in 2022, down from 5,004 in 2021. This reduction translates to a decline from 3.1% to 2.8% as a proportion of accidental deaths – the lowest percentage since 2011 when data collection began.

Highest and lowest rates

France recorded the highest numbers with 784 deaths, representing approximately 16% of the EU total, followed by Germany (542), Poland (535), Romania (472) and Spain (449).

Conversely, the fewest losses were recorded in Luxembourg (1), Malta (3), Cyprus (13) and Slovenia (25).

Gender patterns

As in previous years, the majority of deaths involved men, with the exception of Slovenia where the difference between genders was small (14 men and 11 women). In Luxembourg, the single recorded victim was male.

Eurostat noted that despite the summer period encouraging beach and pool activities, drowning incidents remain a significant and underestimated risk.
