182 DEATHS FROM SUBSTANCE OVERDOSE BETWEEN 2004-2023

 Filenews 29 August 2025

Data from the Monitoring Department/National Drug Documentation and Information Centre of the Cyprus Addiction Treatment Authority (AAEK) show that from 2004 to 2023, 182 overdose deaths have been recorded, with 17 incidents recorded in 2023, of which the vast majority are linked to the use of stimulants, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, It is stated in an announcement by the Authority, on the occasion of the International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31.

This year's message, "Uniting Forces for Life," highlights the importance of collective action and solidarity in preventing overdose deaths.

It adds that, according to the EU Agency for Drugs (EUDA, 2025), at least 6,500 overdose deaths were recorded in the EU in 2023, with the majority linked to the simultaneous use of multiple substances, such as opioids, stimulants, alcohol and benzodiazepines.

The Authority states that it continues to implement comprehensive strategies for the prevention of overdose deaths, with an emphasis on:

Substitution therapy: Enhance opioid users' access and retention to opioid agonist substitution treatment programs, as well as ensure continuity of treatment in prison and upon reintegration into the community.

Naloxone availability: Expanding the availability of naloxone (nasal spray), an opioid antagonist that can reverse overdose. AAEK trains health professionals, who in turn train users and their family members in its proper use.

Harm reduction: Expansion of the services of the mobile unit "CareZone" and installation of automatic machines for the supply of harm reduction material (such as sterile syringes) in all provinces of Cyprus.

Combating stigma: Promoting public awareness campaigns to reduce prejudice and strengthen support for people facing addiction problems.

On the occasion of the International Overdose Awareness Day, Eleftherias Square will be symbolically lit up in lilac on August 31, while on that day, officials of the mobile harm reduction unit "CareZone" and the Cyprus Addiction Treatment Authority (AAEK), will be at Eleftherias Square to inform the public, distribute information material and talk about the prevention and treatment of overdose.

The Authority invites the public to participate in the actions of the International Overdose Awareness Day in Eleftherias Square and to be informed about the prevention of overdose.
