With a slim majority, the House passed U.S. President Donald Trump's long-awaited domestic policy bill, also known as the "Big, Beautiful Bill," which brings sweeping changes in the area of fiscal spending.
The bill was voted for by 218 MPs, while 214 voted against, reflecting the intense party divide and political tensions that accompany it. It was preceded by marginal approval by the Senate. It now remains to be signed by President Trump, which is expected to be done immediately so that the package can become law.
The plan includes significant tax cuts, increased appropriations for the Pentagon and enhanced border security. At the same time, it predicts sweeping cuts in social spending, with analysts pointing to the biggest shrinkage of the federal social protection network in decades.
Trump's proposal has provoked strong reactions from Democrats and social activists, who warn of serious consequences for vulnerable population groups and essential social services. For its part, the White House argues that the bill is necessary to boost the economy, cut red tape and redirect resources to "national priority" areas.
