TOYOTA CYPRUS - THE VOLUNTARY TAKATA RECALL INITIATIVE FOR USED VEHICLES WITHOUT EUROPEAN APPROVAL CONTINUES

Filenews 24 July 2025

Toyota Cyprus, as the official distributor of Toyota Motor Europe, continues the voluntary TAKATA recall campaign and informing owners of used Toyota vehicles from third countries without a European Type Approval (EU-WVTA), the so-called "grey imports", with the aim of enhancing road safety.

Although these vehicles have not been imported by Toyota Cyprus and are not supported by the manufacturer when circulating outside the countries for which they were originally intended, our company responsibly continues this effort.

We are aware that phone calls and messages may be sent to owners of vehicles that have been declared as immobilized or have already been transferred. Nevertheless, our goal remains to inform as many owners as possible in order to ensure everyone's safety.

To date, we have already completed most of the recalls on vehicles of European standards, reaching levels that are internationally recognized as particularly high. At the same time, significant progress has also been made in vehicles without European type-approval, which confirms our firm commitment to safety and responsibility.

To achieve these results, we have invested in

-the creation of a temporary Emergency Center at the State Fair, in Nicosia,
-the reinforcement of the staff with specialized technicians from abroad, the supply of spare parts from Japan,
-the cooperation with call centers and-the upgrade of our digital infrastructure.

At the same time, we remind you that websites of third countries – even if they are viewed through the website of the Department of Road Transport – may not be fully up-to-date. We recommend that owners rely solely on the official notices they receive from either the Road Transport Department or Toyota Cyprus, as well as the VIN numbers posted on the Department's official website (https://www.gov.cy/mtcw/toyota/).

The operation of the Emergency Centre at the State Fair, Nicosia is temporary and will last until the end of November 2025.

A large number of airbags, many of which were made specifically in Japan, are already in stock. In fact, some were sent by air to ensure their timely arrival.

If the parts are not used within the timeframe set by the Government of Cyprus to complete the TAKATA recall (end of October 2025), part of the inventory may be returned to Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) to be made available in other countries or for other vehicles.

In such a case, we cannot know for sure whether it will be possible to ensure availability again for these models, especially for older vehicles.

We urge owners to schedule the replacement immediately to avoid any inconvenience or potential additional costs. With the operation of the dedicated Emergency Center, its full staffing and the extensive stock of spare parts we have secured, our team is able to respond immediately and schedule appointments within a few days.
