ROADS - THIS IS HOW THE €15 million IS DISTRIBUTED BETWEEN THE MUNICIPALITIES

The Municipality of Nicosia will get the lion's share of the €15 million. which will be allocated by the government for the maintenance of roads of 800,592 meters (800 kilometers) in length, which it has loaded to the Local Authorities without paying money until now and which were maintained by the Public Works before the reform. The rest of the roads within the Municipalities, in any case, were maintained by the Local Authorities themselves.

The funds will be allocated based on the length of the roads that are within the boundaries of each Municipality and, of course, each local authority must convince that it is imperative to carry out projects and indeed with "receipts and names", so that the money is paid when there is a need, so that there is no waste and is not allocated for other purposes. in addition to the maintenance of the road network.

For the distribution of the €15 million pie, a relevant list has been prepared, in which, in addition to the Municipality of Nicosia, the Municipality of Lefkara and the Municipality of Ayia Napa appear in the first three positions.

More specifically, based on the list, the Municipality of Nicosia appears to have 75,020 meters of roads within its limits, which correspond to 9.37% of the total and the amount resulting from the sum exceeds €1.4 million and specifically it was estimated at €1,405,584. The Municipality of Lefkara, in which Pano Lefkara, Kato Lefkara, Kornos, Skarinou, Delikipos, Laya and Vavla were incorporated, covering long distances between the constituent communities, has roads of 62,041 meters in length that correspond to 7.75% of the total roads of the new Municipalities and based on these data the financial assistance it is entitled to amounts to €1,162,408. The Municipality of Ayia Napa comes third with 60,995 meters of roads, covering 7.62 percent of all roads and securing €1,142,810.

As far as the rest of the Municipalities are concerned, the situation is as follows:

Municipality of Lakatamia, road length 28,770 meters or 3.59% of the total. He is entitled to €539,038.

Municipality of Strovolos, road length 39,669 or 4.95% of the total road network corresponding to €743,243.

– Municipality of South Nicosia-Dali, road length 53,125 meters or 6.64% of the total corresponding to a sponsorship of €995,357.

– Limassol Municipality, road length 46,667 meters or 5.38% of the total with a collection fee of €874,546.

Municipality of Amathous, road length 26,810 meters or 3.35% and sponsorship €502,315.

Municipality of Polemidia, road length 15,316 meters or 1.91% of the total and sponsorship €286,962.

Municipality of Kouri, 38,620 road lengths or 4.82% of the total. Entitled to €723,589.

-Larnaca Municipality, 49,380 road lengths or 6.17% of the total with a sponsorship of €925,190.

Municipality of Aradippou, road length 35,311 meters or 4.41% and with a sponsorship of €661,591.

Municipality of Dromolaxia – Meneou, road length 25,805 meters corresponding to 3.22% of the total and with a sponsorship of €483,485.

Municipality of Athienos, road length 17,335 meters or a percentage of 2.17% of the total and with a sponsorship of €324,790.

– Municipality of Paphos, road length 20,596 or 2.57% and with a sponsorship of €385,889.

Municipality of East Paphos, road length 32,530 or 4.06% corresponding to a grant of €609,486.

Municipality of Akamas, 48,046 roads or 6% with the right to sponsorship €900,196.

Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, road length 52,909 meters or 6.61% corresponding to €991,310.

– Municipality of Paralimni, road length 52,612 or 6.57% of the total and with a sponsorship of €985,745.

It is noted that the main road network falls under the competence of the Department of Public Works and extends to approximately 2,540 kilometers. Of these, 255 km are, mainly, four-lane or six-lane motorways, 843 km of urban roads (according to the new Law on Municipalities of 2022) and 1,440 km of interurban roads. The rest of the roads were under the jurisdiction of the Municipalities, the District Administrations and the Department of Forests.

Based on the Municipalities Law of 2022 (Law 52(I)/2022), as of 1 July 2024, the responsibility for the maintenance of all roads under the responsibility of the Department of Public Works (in municipal areas in the new municipalities under creation, with emphasis on roads of Primary Importance) passed to the new Municipalities.

Motorways and expressways were excluded from the new regulation, which will remain under the responsibility of the Department of Public Works, regardless of whether they will be located within the administrative boundaries of Municipalities or Communities.
