EMERGENCY SIGNAL FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR THE PROLONGED HEAT WAVE AND RECOMMENDATIONS DUE TO INCREASED FIRE RISK

 Filenews 23 July 2025

The Cyprus Fire Service reminds that, due to the prolonged increased temperatures, the risk of explosion and expansion of fires is extremely high.

It also appeals warmly to the public to be particularly careful, avoiding activities and actions that are likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flame (emery, soldering, welding, etc.), disposing of lit cigarette butts or other hot objects in an open area, etc.

In addition, special attention should be paid to preventive measures to avoid causing a fire from the exhausts of various generators or water pumps in the countryside.

It is reminded that the burning of grass, branches and garbage is prohibited and that lighting a fire anywhere is also prohibited, except for the preparation of food within the specially permitted and designated areas.

In areas where, according to the Meteorological Bulletin, heatwave conditions with winds and gusts of wind are observed, with the instructions of the Chief Fire Chief, increased and prolonged patrols will be carried out, both on the ground and in the air with loaded firefighting aircraft. The Fire Service is in contact and coordination with the Police, the Forestry Department and all the Repression Services in this regard.

Anyone who notices smoke or fire, is kindly requested to immediately inform the Fire Service through the emergency number 112 or the Forestry Department at 1407, stating the exact location of the fire for an immediate and effective response. In addition, in cases where actions are observed that may indicate malicious or deliberate firefighting, immediately inform the Police and the Fire Service.
