The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation "Koios" of the University of Cyprus announce the operation of the "Drop-Count" application. The app was designed to help households in Cyprus understand and calculate how much water they consume daily.
As stated in a relevant announcement, "the increasing demand for water, due to population growth, tourism and agricultural activity, as well as the decrease in rainfall as a result of climate change, intensify the pressures on our water resources. Measures taken – such as desalination and upgrading water distribution systems to reduce losses – are crucial. However, the prudent use of water and the avoidance of waste in our daily lives, where possible, remain equally important to address the problem."

In Cyprus, according to data, the average water consumption is estimated at around 140 liters per person per day, while the corresponding European average is lower, at 124 liters. Our country, he adds, has been facing a serious water scarcity problem over time, and is among the five most vulnerable countries in the world to water stress. At the same time, 30% of Europeans face similar problems.
The "Drop-Meter" app is aimed at the general public, and calculates how much water each person consumes individually, compares consumption with the average in Cyprus, proposing practical and measurable ways to save water, as well as advice for parents. The app is available free of charge, is easy to use and friendly to the general public, and is tailored to the needs of everyday life.
The application was developed by the Intelligent Water Systems team at the "Koios" Center of Excellence, based on research results from the international literature. The team specializes in water monitoring and management technologies in general.
The Center of Excellence "Koios" has made the application available free of charge to the Ministry, as part of their cooperation for a permanent solution of the water problem, with the aim of raising awareness among citizens and strengthening the responsible use of water. The Ministry expresses its gratitude to the "Koios" Center of Excellence for the provision of the implementation and their cooperation with the aim of jointly promoting it, strengthening the collective effort of sustainable management of water resources.
Finally, the Ministry invites the public to use the "Drop-Count" application as a simple, but essential step, contributing to the effort for responsible water use and tackling water scarcity in our country.
