A pharmaceutical shipment of almost two tons departed Cyprus for Botswana, in the framework of the International Action Plan on Childhood Cancer (Cy-IAPCC), with the aim of supporting children with cancer hospitalized in Gaborone.
According to an announcement by the "Elpida" foundation, the shipment includes critical pharmaceutical preparations such as antibiotics, analgesics and antiemetics, which were urgently requested by the local authorities, due to serious deficiencies in the country's paediatric oncology system.
The initiative was taken by Professor Loizos G. Loizou, head of Cy-IAPCC, after an assessment of the needs in collaboration with Paediatric Oncologists and the health authorities of Botswana. The shipment was made possible thanks to the free offer of medicines by Medochemie, after an immediate response from the company's CEO, Daphne Pitta.
The "Elpida" Foundation expresses its gratitude to the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs for supporting the mission through the CyprusAid mechanism, as well as for the continuous institutional support.
The mission is the second for 2025, following a similar mission in May, which included cancer drugs and innovative targeted therapies. At the same time, Cyprus provides technical support for the implementation of international therapeutic protocols in cooperation with local authorities.
The President of Botswana, Duma Boko, and the Minister of Health, Stephen Modise, publicly expressed their gratitude to the Republic of Cyprus, the "Elpida" Foundation and Medochemie, describing the support as crucial for the care of children with cancer in the country.
