Developments are taking place around the case with the ring, led by a criminal and other persons who were trafficking large sums of money, which allegedly came from illegal activities. In total, the amounts withheld by the Police reached €545,000.
The Police, in the context of their investigations into this serious case, have located an amount of €238,000 in a bank safe belonging to a 37-year-old businessman and well-known socialite, while initially another €307,000 had been found. Also, the accounting books of the goldsmith and other businesses are being investigated because they seem to show excess profits that were not justified. This was said yesterday, during the process of renewing the detention decree of three of the six suspects, namely the father, mother and brother of the 37-year-old.
What stood out during the proceedings that unfolded before the Nicosia District Court, is that there was a rift between the barrister and the family, while it is not excluded that the family distanced itself from the relationship that the 37-year-old had with the barrister. This is because while the investigator of the case of a sergeant of the TAE Headquarters, Makis Nikolaou, was testifying, he was informed and then informed the Court, That from the opening of the 37-year-old's mother's mobile phone, it emerged that her daughter informed her (obviously in writing with a message) that the convict wants his money back because disagreements arose between them. Although the investigator insisted that the case is being investigated comprehensively for all six suspects, the family's lawyer, Ilias Stefanou, indicated that he wishes to be separated. He also clarified from what the investigator testified, that the initial information that stated that the amounts trafficked came from drugs, protection and betting agencies, it seems that there are no indications of drug trafficking.
As the investigator stated, against the three suspects, offences of conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor, offences in violation of the "Prevention of Corruption Law", illegal possession of property and offences in violation of the "Prevention and Combating of Money Laundering Law", which, according to the data under examination, were committed from 01/01/2025 until today on the territory of Cyprus Republic. He referred to the initial information that brought the barrister, through a third suspect, to send about €50,000 a week to the 37-year-old, with whom he maintains a relationship, money that consisted of receipts from drug trafficking, protection and gambling. He reiterated that the informant reported that in recent months an amount close to one million had been collected, while he mentioned that the 37-year-old was distributing the money in five places. That is, in the apartments where they lived and in the goldsmith's shop.
As for the notorious painting that the barrister had donated to the 37-year-old's mother, it was clarified that its value amounts to €2,000. According to the investigator, the detective was talking to the 37-year-old and the third suspect via video call, messages and had calls from various applications.
According to the investigator, the 37-year-old's parents and her brother, although they respected the right to silence, nevertheless, in the matter of the money found in his homes, reported that it belonged to the 37-year-old. Specifically for the €83,000 found in a travel bag in her brother's apartment, he said it was brought by the 37-year-old suspect who had the key to his apartment without telling him anything. According to the investigator, the 1st suspect (father of the 37-year-old socialite), during interrogation, respected the right to silence. He stated, however, that his daughter was in a relationship with a convict, but he had no communication with him. He said he knew the money was from revenue from gas stations and a betting agency.
The right to silence was respected by the others, however, the 37-year-old's mother said that all she knew was that the convict gave expensive gifts to her daughter and did not know about illegal activities. He also knew, according to the investigator, that the convict was the owner of a betting agency and a gas station.
According to Mr. Nicolaou, information was received that an audit found that the 37-year-old's institute had income that was not justified. He also mentioned that a search of the 37-year-old's safe was found to contain €238,000 in cash. At the same time, he said that two computers and accounting documents were received from the family's goldsmith's shop for checking, while, as Mr. Nicolaou said, nightclubs will be examined in order to determine whether the revenues are linked. He also said that the parents' claims that the victim had income from betting agencies and gas stations are not confirmed, since the convict stated that he is not the owner of a betting agency and a gas station. At this point, the family's lawyer, Ilias Stefanou, who appears together with the lawyer Yiannis Nearchou, countered that these had been transferred to them and the barrister was not asked if it was what he told them or was simply asked if he had gas stations and mouthpieces and answered in the negative.
Testimony about illegal gambling revenues and protection, outside drug investigations
For the case, 41 testimonies have been received so far and another 63 are expected to be taken, which is why the detention of the three suspects has been requested to be renewed for another eight days. Their defense lawyers objected to the request of the Police. Lawyer Ilias Stefanou, addressing the investigator, said that from the questions during the interrogation, it emerges that they are investigating the possibility that the money was from protection, without reference to gambling or drugs, with Mr. Nicolaou replying that it came from "illegal activities" and that he did not take part in the interrogation process. Then, Mr. Stefanou asked how the drugs came out of the investigations, with the investigator replying that they didn't come out, but no testimony was found. The testimony is about gambling and protection.
Furthermore, Mr. Stefanou referred to the agreement made six days ago between the defense and the Police, where a six-day detention order had initially been requested, a time that was considered sufficient. However, Mr. Nicolaou said that new testimony emerged and the allegations of the suspects were refuted, since they are not confirmed, hence the renewal of their detention for eight days. Finally, the examiner of the case said that the bank accounts of all the suspects will be opened and a financial investigation will be carried out by the Financial Crime Fighting Sub-Directorate.
The Court, after hearing both sides, considered the request of the Police justified and issued the 8-day detention order of the three suspects. It is noted that the detention decree of the 37-year-old and the 40-year-old expires tomorrow Saturday and it is expected that the Police will request its renewal, since there is still a large amount of investigative work left.
