As the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications and Works, we visited the Paphos District yesterday with the aim of examining on the ground problematic points of the road network, to strengthen the implementation of what has already been agreed and to closely monitor the progress of the projects according to the timetables set.
The study for the installation of electric lighting on the road from Anarita Interchange to the entrance of Paphos Airport is in progress. The start of the works is expected within the last quarter of 2026.
By September 2025, it is planned to register the last section of the road to the airport – which concerns Turkish Cypriot properties – in the Town Planning, in order to complete the single road connection.
The recently passed law on urban land reclamation solves chronic problems of road registration and facilitates the continuation of the works.
The regulatory plan from the Municipality of Ierokipia to Paphos Airport is in the study phase, with a horizon of completion and approval within two years.
The unfinished section of the road to Paphos Airport remains stagnant due to the negative opinion of the Department of the Environment. An effort is being made to convince the department so that the project can be implemented.
In addition, the need for a modern road network that responds to the expected increase in tourist traffic was emphasized for the umpteenth time, as Paphos Airport is planned to be expanded to serve 5 million visitors per year.
The construction of the bridge for the interconnection of the industrial areas of Mesoghi and Tremithoussa is a crucial project for the decongestion of traffic. Although the project started as a process in 2001, it was delayed due to lack of funding and technical problems.
The last tender was fruitless due to exclusive conditions. Today, the cost estimate amounts to €2,600,000, while in the budget of the Ministry of Commerce
There is an approved budget of €1,500,000. A review of the tender conditions is required to ensure the participation of contractors.
The road project of the Chloraka-Peyia road is in a mature phase of preparation. The Department of Public Works has made improvements to the existing road (sidewalks, crossings) until the start of the project.
The total cost amounts to €32 million and the PCN has been approved.
The aim is to call for tenders at the beginning of 2026, with a completion horizon within two years. A budget of €3 million for 2026 was requested to cover 10% of the contractor's contractual obligation.
We request the sending of written letters from the relevant departments with clear timelines for the progress and implementation of the ongoing projects.
