THE PRODUCERS OF PAPHOS TOOK TO THE STREETS TODAY TO PROTEST ABOUT LACK OF WATER SUPPLY FOR THEIR CROPS

Filenews 21 June 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

Agricultural producers of the western low area of Paphos took to the streets for an hour at noon, on the coastal avenue of Coral Bay, protesting against the problematic and reduced water supply for irrigation of their crops.

The producers, led by banana producers, symbolically cut off traffic on this busy road artery in a peaceful and dynamic event, demanding that the Water Department proceed with the concession of the quantities of water that had been pledged to keep their plantations alive.

While the Minister's decision is to grant 50% of the plantations' needs, they argued, they have recently been given minimal amounts of water for irrigation, resulting in the drying up of seasonal crops and the threat of destruction of their permanent crops.

The event was attended by representatives of agricultural organizations, AKEL Paphos MP Valentinos Fakontis and representatives of parties and organizations.

With a statement also issued by the Paphos Municipal Corporation, it expresses solidarity with the protesting producers, stating that actions and measures are needed since the situation is desperate.
