Five defendants have been found guilty of murdering 60-year-old Dorotheos Dimitriadis on 4 January 2023 in Latsia, following a verdict delivered by the Nicosia Criminal Court.

The three-member judicial panel announced its verdict today after a lengthy deliberation process lasting over three hours, finding 32-year-old Elena Andreou, her 37-year-old partner Michalis Michael, 29-year-old Georgios Diola, and 30-year-old Fragkeskos Stavrou guilty of manslaughter. A fifth defendant, 27-year-old Ioannis Kokkinos, had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter at an early stage of proceedings.

The court determined that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt through comprehensive evidence presentation.

Defence counsel for the convicted defendants will present mitigation arguments on 17 June, followed by sentencing proceedings. Andreou, mother of four minors, had been released on bail conditions during the trial.

Case background

The incident began around 6:45 pm on 4 January 2023, when police received an anonymous tip about individuals attacking someone in Latsia. Dimitriadis had gone to help his family friend, who was arguing with her neighbour.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the 61-year-old lying in the entrance of an apartment building. The confrontation escalated after Andreou answered the door, leading to physical violence between Michael and the victim.

The 26-year-old at some point dragged the 60-year-old to the stairs of the apartment building where he hit him again with his hands and feet on the face and stomach. Michael subsequently contacted additional individuals through his son to assist at the scene, resulting in what authorities described as a brutal beating.

Initially, seven suspects were arrested in connection with the murder, with three people remanded in custody on the first day, followed by two additional arrests bringing the total to five. The case was investigated as conspiracy to commit murder and manslaughter.

During the trial proceedings, Andreou and Michael provided sworn testimony, whilst Diola and Stavrou exercised their right to remain silent. Police reportedly received new CCTV material during the investigation, contributing to the comprehensive evidence presentation that led to the guilty verdict.

In a joint operation for the smuggling of illegal immigrants between the British Bases Areas (BB) and the Republic of Cyprus, 11 people were arrested in the early hours of yesterday along the old Larnaca – Famagusta road.

Officials from the BB Customs and Immigration Department confirmed that six mediators and five banned migrants are now being held in police custody after they were arrested while trying to pass through the controlled areas.

The men, all Syrian nationals, were arrested as part of Operation Nexus, which targets offences related to illegal transit and migration.

The head of the BB Customs and Migration Department, Mark Hartley, revealed that the success of this latter operation was a result of the close coordination between the Bases and their counterparts by the Migration Department of the Republic of Cyprus Famagusta and the Green Line Patrol Unit.

He explained: "Both we and the BB Police work very closely with the Republic of Cyprus and have an excellent cooperative relationship and I would like to thank the Inspector of the Immigration Department of Famagusta for providing his full support.

"Thanks to our joint information during this operation, we were able to have a very positive result."

Assistant Police Director of Dhekelia, Police Officer Konstantinos Petrou, explained: "We take this crime very seriously and it is important that we continue to share information with the Cyprus Police to ensure that we are able to deal with this illegal activity."

"It is also very important to continue the joint operations of the BB Police, Customs and Cyprus Police, in an effort to limit the opportunities of criminals who take advantage of jurisdictional challenges."
