Iran attempted to attack Israelis in Cyprus, but the Police of the Republic of Cyprus prevented the attack, says Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.

As Saar writes, thanks to the activity of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with the Israeli security services, the terrorist attack was prevented, while at the same time thanking Cyprus "for its immediate and effective actions".

In his post, Saar states that, "the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – the terrorist arm of the Iranian regime – attempted to carry out an attack against Israeli citizens in Cyprus.

– Thanks to the activity of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with the Israeli security services, the terrorist attack was prevented.

– Israel thanks Cyprus for its swift and effective actions.

The Iranian criminal regime deliberately targets Israeli citizens both in Israel and abroad.

Israel will continue to act to remove the existential threat posed by the Iranian terrorist regime."

It is recalled that the arrest of an Azerbaijani as a suspect for terrorism was proceeded today by the TAE Headquarters, following information that it is directly organizing a terrorist attack. The suspect was brought this morning before the Limassol District Court, which ordered his detention for a period of eight days, in a closed-door procedure, due to the nature of the case.

According to information from Filenews, on 20/06/2025, highly confidential and highly reliable information was received at the TAE Headquarters from a foreign collaborating service. The information stated that the suspect is in Cyprus and is collecting information from April 2025 until today, regarding the presence of a foreign military force on the island, and possibly planning an immediate terrorist attack.

According to the same information, the suspect is allegedly a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

From physical surveillance carried out since June 2025, by a collaborating service, it was found that the suspect lives in an apartment near the British bases in Zakaki, Limassol, an area adjacent to the British bases.

It should be noted that, during the surveillance, the suspect appeared to be moving on foot near the British bases, holding a large camera with a magnifying glass almost daily, as well as three mobile phones. He allegedly took photos with both his phones and other electronic devices, repeatedly recording suspicious movements. At the same time, he took printed notes.

In addition, it was found that he travelled from Limassol to Paphos by bus, and then went by another bus near the "Andreas Papandreou" air base. There he also moved suspiciously, taking various photos, on suspicion that he was spying on military installations.

He is being investigated for offences of terrorism, espionage, conspiracy to commit a felony and other related offences.

In a statement, the Police say that today, following a coordinated operation by the TAE Headquarters, a person who appears to be related to terrorism offenses was arrested.

He appeared in the morning before a District Court and an 8-day detention order was issued against him, for offences related, among others, to terrorism and espionage.

The investigative work is in progress.
