Filenews 12 June 2025
On Friday, from 10:00 to 11:00 in the morning, the employees of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre in Nicosia went on a one-hour work stoppage, following the unacceptable and irregular, as they denounced, dismissal of a member. In a statement, the workers' unions state that this symbolic work stoppage is an expression of solidarity with the colleague "who was treated unacceptably, without proper and fair procedures being followed".
The aim of the strike, according to the workers' unions UYK-SEK and SEVETTIK-PEO, is not to inconvenience patients, as the departments will be adequately staffed to ensure their uninterrupted service.
In the announcement of the trade unions, it is stated that the employees of the Oncology Centre of the Bank of Cyprus have been serving their fellow human beings with dedication for more than 25 years and the behaviour shown by the Management is not in line with the sensitivities that such an Organisation should have, in which the employees of the Oncology Centre day and night fight for the health of patients with a full sense of responsibility.
However, the announcement continues, it should be clarified that the responsibility lies primarily with the employer, who with irregular procedures and without a trace of sensitivity proceeded to dismissal, without considering the possible side effects.
The final decision belongs to the Council of the Oncology Centre, which consists of executives of the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, the Ministers of Health and Finance and executives of the Bank of Cyprus, while the President of the Board of Directors is appointed by the President of the Republic.
The unions call on the Management and the Council of the Oncology Center to revoke the illegal dismissal, so that the colleague can immediately return to work.
Announcement by the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre
The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre expresses its disappointment at the decision of the unions UIK-SEK and SEVETTYK – PEO to proceed with strike measures and categorically rejects the allegations of illegal or irregular dismissal.
We consider it necessary to clarify that the termination of the employment relationship with the employee in question was not an arbitrary act, but a documented decision, which was taken following an internal Disciplinary Procedure. All actions were carried out on the basis of the Centre's established operating regulations and in full compliance with the principles of transparency, objectivity and good administration.
The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre respects institutions and collective expressions, however, public debate should not be based on misleading or unilateral readings of facts. The sensitivity and responsibility that characterize the Centre's management over time are reflected both in the way it supports its employees and in the way it responds to any incident that requires critical decisions.
We recognize and honour the long-term, uninterrupted contribution of our staff, which is the cornerstone of the operation of the Oncology Center. We remain firmly committed to maintaining a work environment based on fairness, meritocracy and mutual respect.
