ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF PEYIA - A LIFE'S WORK FOR THE AREA THANKS TO A PRIVATE DONATION

Filenews 12 June 2025

The preparatory work for the creation of an Archaeological Museum in Agios Georgios Pegeia is now in the works, the Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, told "F", pointing out that the issue is currently being examined by the competent state departments and expressed the hope that the preparatory work and political decisions for the implementation of the large donation will be completed soon.

The founder and CEO of the group, Giorgos Ioannou, recently announced the new museum as an offer of the construction and tourism group, Korantina Homes, announcing that he will undertake the full cost for the major cultural project in the Peyia area, which is estimated at  €1.5 million.

The archaeological museum, in the area of Agios Georgios, is considered to be absolutely necessary in order to house and highlight the important antiquities of Cape Drepanon, which in recent years has been constantly brought to light by archaeological excavations. This important development is made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Mr. Ioannou, the announcement of which was made at the end of March during a conference held at the tourist resort of Cap St. Georges to present the results of the archaeological investigations at Cape Drepanon of Agios Georgios.

The importance of the archaeological findings of the area was highlighted by the Greek professor and head of the archaeological excavations of the area, Mr. Bakirtzis, who stressed that the area has been inhabited since the early Christian years, but flourished during the period of Justinian, i.e. during the 6th century A.D. Especially regarding the baptistery found in the area, Professor Bakirtzis stressed that it was found that Christians from all regions of the Mediterranean were baptized there.

The Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, spoke of a project that will brighten the archaeological past of the area and highlight aspects of the history of Peyia and the wider area that today are only partially offered to its millions of visitors over the years.
