Both at the Andreas Papandreou Air Base and at Larnaca Airport, after the implementation of the Estia Plan, friendly countries requested facilities to park or use the airports as a transfer station. As a result, military transport aircraft have arrived, which are used to transport and evacuate population from the war zones, according to Lieutenant Colonel Christos Pieris, spokesman of the Ministry of Defense.
Asked by CNA about the number of transports that have arrived, Mr. Pieris said that they avoid giving exact numbers but that there are a small number of transport aircraft both at the "Andreas Papandreou" air base and at Larnaca airport for the purpose of strengthening and transporting the civilian population so that they can be evacuated from the war zone.
Mr. Pieris noted that in the context of the implementation of the Estia Plan and the last time we had the riots in both Sudan and Lebanon, this system worked.
Cyprus is in a very important geostrategic position, which serves several countries to reach Cyprus outside war zones and then end up at their final destination. As Mr. Pieris explained, it has nothing to do with military operations but mainly with humanitarian issues or assistance provided.
In conclusion, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense said that they are monitoring the situation for the sixth day, noting that they are taking all the emergency measures they need to take for our security.
