BEWARE - FRAUD BY PERSONS IMPERSONATING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS CONTINUES
The Police are calling on the public to exercise particular caution, following a number of reports received from citizens, regarding fraud committed by individuals who falsely present themselves as government officials, with the aim of stealing money from bank accounts. The fraudsters send e-mails to citizens and falsely present themselves as officials of services such as the Social Insurance Services, the Cyprus Electricity Authority and the Tax Department. They instruct citizens to reveal bank account and card details or to take actions such as confirming transactions, with the aim of extracting money. The public is urged to be particularly careful and to take the following protective measures: Do not respond to their calls and instructions. Do not disclose sensitive information, such as passwords, usernames, PINs, identification details and bank card or account details, to third parties. Verify the identity of callers by contacting them through the official channels of the services they claim to represent.
