ATLAS PAPHOS WITHDRAWS FROM BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Filenews 10 May 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

Allegations of deviations and behaviours foreign to the fan spirit were made by the Atlas Paphos basketball club in an announcement.

The Atlas men's team played yesterday for the semi-finals of the men's B' division championship against Agios Nikolaos and after what happened, announced today that it is withdrawing from the continuation of the games wanting to protect its athletes, but also to stay away from an environment and energy that has nothing to do with the fan spirit.

Atlas complains that during the game, the team's mission faced verbal attacks, verbal threats, spitting on those on the bench and other behaviours that are not appropriate in a sports environment. Similar incidents were also noted towards the referees, he points out.

After the end of the match, and while the teams were in the locker room, there were verbal attacks against the team's coach and his brother, the Paphos club also reports, with the coach maintaining his composure and protecting his brother, despite the blows he received. Fortunately, the presence of cooler people contributed to the restoration of calm, it is reported.

Given these incidents, our team considers that it is not in line with our values to continue our presence in an environment that promotes such actions, Atlas Paphos emphasizes in its announcement. Based on the principle that the health and safety of our athletes, many of whom are minors and members of national teams, is of paramount importance, we have decided not to participate in the next game, assuming the cost of our choice.

Everyone must assume their responsibilities and contribute to maintaining a safe environment in sport, he says. We condemn all forms of violence and call on all those involved to contribute to the restoration of sporting spirit and dignity. Sport, and especially basketball, must continue to be a space of culture and respect, avoiding dark times and behaviours that degrade the sport.
