A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at 01:51 on Wednesday morning, in the sea area between Kasos and Karpathos.
According to the revised solution of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicenter of the earthquake is located in the sea area 19 km. SE of Kasos and the focal depth is estimated at 62.5 kilometers.
The state channel reported that the earthquake was felt in Limassol and Paphos.
The strong seismic tremor brought disruption to the residents of the southern Aegean islands and eastern Crete, where it was particularly felt.
Despite the relatively large distance of Heraklion from the epicenter, the earthquake gave the impression of three alternating "waves" and a feeling of duration of at least 15 seconds.
The earthquake was also felt in areas of Attica and on the coast of Turkey.
According to initial information, there are no reports of damage.
According to the President of OASP, Mr. Efthimios Lekkas, who spoke to ERT, "the main characteristic of this major tremor is that the focal depth is 60 kilometers. This means that the traffic reached Kasos and Karpathos with reduced intensity and much more so in Crete, with the result that according to the initial data and the initial descriptions of the residents, we do not have any significant impacts, without of course having a complete picture."
The professor also emphasized that due to its focal depth, this earthquake is not expected to have a rich aftershock sequence. "Such earthquakes occur once," he said characteristically.
And he added that "the earthquake essentially occurred on the Greek arc and is not linked to the earthquakes in the Cyclades or Turkey."
Tsunami warning
At 02:36 in the morning, residents of Kasos, Karpathos and eastern Crete received a tsunami warning message from 112, according to which they are called upon to immediately remove themselves from the coasts.
