UAE MOBILE DESALINATION UNITS TO BE OPERATIONAL BY JUNE AS WATER SHORTAGE SOLUTION

 in-cyprus 26 April 2025 - by Angelos Nicolaou

The United Arab Emirates will provide Cyprus with 14 mobile desalination units expected to be operational by June, addressing water shortages in the Limassol and Paphos districts where demand increases significantly during summer months.

Each unit consists of two 40-foot containers housing complete desalination systems, with individual production capacity of 1,140 cubic metres of drinking water daily. The combined units will generate 15,960 cubic metres daily, substantially reinforcing existing water supplies.

Authorities are prioritising Limassol and Paphos in the distribution plans, with ten units destined for Limassol and four for Paphos. Technical teams are currently conducting site assessments to determine optimal installation locations, considering both geographical needs and infrastructure availability.

Where Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) power connections are unavailable, generators will be deployed to ensure operational readiness. Officials are simultaneously finalising logistics for transporting the 28 containers to Cyprus.

The June deadline for full operation has been established as a priority for relevant authorities, with the primary objective of preventing water cuts across the country.

Current data indicates significant water supply reductions are expected in all districts, as existing desalination facilities meet only 70 percent of demand, while reservoir levels are projected to reach critical lows by year-end.
