Filenews 20 April 2025
On the night of the Resurrection, the whole of Cyprus was enveloped in fires and lampratzes, with the situation escalating in several areas.
The Police were on foot all over Cyprus, trying to manage the incidents, but there was no shortage of incidents and illegalities.
Many of the "feats" were recorded on video and circulated on social media, causing strong reactions and concern among citizens with several comments being sharp.
All this unfolded just a few hours after the tragic loss of 22-year-old Daniel in the Lampratzia in Strovolos, when an EAC pole fell and hit him fatally on the head, plunging Strovolos and the whole of Cyprus into mourning.
Police: The uniform is not a target
The Police in a statement expresses its deep concern about the repeated incidents that occur every year during the Easter period and which, as reported, tarnish the message of the Resurrection, without responding to the spirit of the days.
As noted in the announcement, the phenomenon of firecrackers and improvised explosive devices being fired not only in the air, but also directly against citizens and people serving society.
Particular concern is expressed about attacks on police officers, who – as noted – are injured and put in serious danger in the exercise of their duties. Characteristic is the recent incident in the area of Livadia, where, according to the Police, members of the Force were attacked with firecrackers, fireworks, stones and other objects, while they were operating as part of their service.
A similar incident was recorded in the area of Latsia, when young people attacked police officers who were trying to ensure the unhindered passage and safety of a fire truck, which was attempting to extinguish a fire.
The Police clearly states that such phenomena are not tolerated and underlines that the uniform of its members is not a target, but a symbol of protection, security and legality. The members of the Police, as it is emphasized, are people next door – friends, neighbours, relatives – who work every day for everyone's safety.
