The mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedonos, launches spikes that some are leaving the drug barons undisturbed, after the detection of a huge quantity – 120 kilos of cannabis and cocaine – that were sent by ship to Cyprus. The mayor, in fact, expresses dissatisfaction with the ineffectiveness of repression, underlining that drugs have entered high schools.
Specifically, Phaedon Phaedonos states that:
"When I was talking about a very serious problem with drugs in Cyprus and especially in Paphos, some people said that I did it with exaggeration. I was talking about corrupt insiders who turned their backs on the merchants and again I was told that I was speaking without evidence. Now they've woken up partially and made some changes to the bodies and they're detecting hundreds of pounds of drugs within two months," he says.
Drug trafficking, Mr. Phaedon continues, is several tons every year and the turnover of traffickers is many tens of millions annually. "So far, the Police have failed to arrest even one of the major dealers, nor have they been able to touch their protectors and associates with a white collar. Some people walk around from political offices. It requires political will and great courage that does not exist so far... It's a shame because drugs have entered high schools now.''
