With the aim of coordinating the competent authorities and taking decisions that will prevent the recurrence of the unacceptable phenomenon, a meeting was held today at the Paphos EDA on the issue of the ongoing sewage leakage from the pumping stations of the Paphos Biological Station in the coastal area of Geroskipou.
The President of the EDA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, described the phenomenon of repeated overflowing of sewage on Geroskipou beach as criminal and expressed the hope that by taking decisions today for additional measures, the phenomenon that discredits Paphos will be eliminated.
Among the decisions, Mr. Pittokopitis said, is the daily on-site inspection at the Biological Station and the pumping station operated by a private individual. This was deemed necessary, he argued, since it is judged that there is mismanagement of the unit and the EDA received a problematic contract, according to his expression regarding the management status of the Biological Station. He attributed the mismanagement to the fact that the contractors took the contract quite low and did not make the profit they expected, with the result, he said, that machinery was not adequately maintained and that the operation control of the plant suffered more broadly.
At the same time, the Municipality of Ierokipia also intervenes with a memorandum to the Director of the Department of the Environment, from whom they ask for immediate intervention and measures to stop the unbearable stench from this situation.
