GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH BY AUB

 Pafos Live 25 April 2025

The American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo), based in Paphos, is carrying out a new groundbreaking research in the field of smart robotics, with a grant of €100,000 from the Foundation for Research and Innovation (RIF).

The funding, which was granted under the VISION ERC Call, will allow the establishment of a Smart Robotics Laboratory at the University and the launch in Cyprus of a new research direction in robotics, artificial intelligence and human-robot interaction.

The project, entitled "Human-Guided Robotic Manipulation through Augmented Reality for Warehouse Automation", is led by Dr. Raphael Papallas, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at AUB Mediterraneo. The aim of the project is to address labour shortages in warehouses through semi-autonomous robots and augmented reality interfaces.

As Dr. "The project launches a new line of research in Cyprus and at the same time supports the development of technologies that are aligned with the strategic priorities of the European Union to address global challenges, enhance competitiveness and strengthen economic resilience".

The project also envisages the recruitment of a postdoctoral researcher to be directly involved in the project, while its funding from the RIF supports and contributes to the submission of a new strong research proposal to the ERC Starting Grant, which is one of the most important and recognized research funding programs in Europe.

"We are proud to support innovative research that responds to global challenges and creates new opportunities in Cyprus," said the Rector of AUB Mediterraneo, Professor Wassim El Hajj.

This initiative further strengthens the role of AUB Mediterraneo as a regional pillar of excellence in education, research and innovation.
