CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 22 April 2025

A 16-year-old who had been arrested on Easter Sunday evening for the incident of throwing firecrackers at police officers at the Kissonerga stadium was released yesterday afternoon. The teenager has been charged in writing and will be summoned later while police are looking for other peers involved in the incident.

After the completion of the Easter events in the Kissonerga district, in the municipality of Akamas, a group of young people remained for hours in the area setting off firecrackers. Members of the Police went to the area where they found about 15 young people, who as soon as they noticed the police officers began to leave.

The police officers stopped one of them, 16 years old, while nearby they found a waist bag that he had previously in his possession. A check on the bag found six firecrackers, resulting in the young man being arrested for the flagrant offense of illegal possession of explosives. During his arrest, according to the police, the young man resisted, while a group of young people threw a number of firecrackers at the police officers, without causing any injury. The minor was transferred to the offices of the Paphos Police Department, where he was interrogated in the presence of his parents and a lawyer.

And this at a time when a nationwide police campaign for the prevention of juvenile delinquency during the Easter period was underway.

A bloody episode unfolded yesterday afternoon in the Central Prison.

Specifically, the Police were informed about the injury of a prisoner.

The injured man was transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital.

As it was established, he has injuries to various parts of his body, possibly from a sharp object.

The case is being investigated by the Nicosia TAE.

Update - The motive of the perpetrators of the attack with a sharp object against a 27-year-old suspect in the Central Prison is being sought by the Nicosia Crime Detection Department.

The injured person, who was transferred in the afternoon to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Nicosia General Hospital, has injuries in various parts of his body, possibly from a knife.

According to information, it is believed that the person who was attacked had posted several videos from the Central Prison via mobile phone. The same information states that disciplinary measures had been taken against him by the management of the penitentiary.

Therefore, the possibility that the attack that the 27-year-old received is related to the dissatisfaction caused to other prisoners by his alleged action to post visual material from the Prisons is being considered.

The 27-year-old had served a multi-year prison sentence for a homicide he committed in the previous decade. He had been released from prison around the end of 2023 and shortly after he was arrested on suspicion of shooting in the area of Agios Andreas.

Regarding the 27-year-old's health condition, an authoritative source who spoke to Filenews said that after first aid was provided to him, he was taken back to the Central Prison. This means that his condition is not serious.
