The coordinated, pan-Cypriot checks of the Police continued yesterday, for the prevention of juvenile delinquency, in view of the Easter holidays.

As part of the operation, during the night and at dawn today, members of the Police carried out 108 checks in parks, church enclosures and other open spaces and premises, frequented by young people.

During the checks in Paphos, the members of the Police proceeded to the arrest of a 16-year-old, for illegal possession of explosives.

Specifically, around 9 p.m. Yesterday, members of the Police went to a community stadium in Paphos, after receiving information about the throwing of firecrackers. A group of about 15 young people was spotted there, who as soon as they noticed the police officers began to leave.

The police officers intercepted one of them, while at a nearby distance they found a waist bag that he had previously possessed. A check on the bag found six firecrackers, resulting in the young man being arrested for the flagrant offense of illegal possession of explosives.

During his arrest, the young man resisted, while a group of young people threw a number of firecrackers at the police officers, without causing any injury.

The arrested man was transferred to the offices of the Paphos Police Department, where it was found that he was a 16-year-old resident of Paphos. He was interrogated in the presence of his parents and a lawyer and was subsequently detained.

The Paphos TAE continues the exams.

A serious incident occurred in the early hours of Easter Sunday outside a nightclub in Nicosia, where about 50 foreigners were involved in a fierce fight.

During the fight, the people involved were holding iron bars, pots and cones, causing damage to the exterior of the premises and creating scenes of tension and upheaval. Customers came out of the nightclub holding bottles of alcoholic beverages.

Police officers from the Ledra station immediately intervened, while subsequently members of Team Z were also called to the scene, who imposed order.
