The Paphos Police proceeded with the arrest of a 52-year-old man after it was discovered that he had packages of cocaine, weighing approximately one kilo, in his stomach.

According to a spokesperson for the Office of the Communications Branch of the Police Headquarters, shortly before 16:00 on the afternoon of Good Friday, members of the Police, the National Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the customs authorities at Paphos Airport, in the context of investigating information, conducted a search of the luggage of a 52-year-old man, a third-country national, who arrived at Paphos Airport on a flight from a European country. 

During his examination, it was revealed that he had packages of cocaine in his body.

The 52-year-old was taken to Paphos General Hospital for medical examinations where he was detained for further treatment. According to the Police, the 52-year-old allegedly had approximately 70 packages on his body, with a total weight of approximately one kilogram of cocaine.

During his hospitalization, he lost five packages weighing a total of approximately 80 grams.

He was arrested to facilitate the investigation into an ongoing case of illegal importation of drugs, illegal possession of drugs, and illegal possession of drugs with the intent to supply to another person, in relation to . He had packages of drugs on his body

The 52-year-old is still hospitalized and under guard.

The Police in Larnaca made the arrests of three young people, aged 19, 20 and 20, in connection with a case of mob, possession of explosives and an offensive instrument. The incident occurred around 04:30 in the morning in the area of Agioi Anargyroi.

According to the Police, the three arrested were part of a group of about 20 youngpeople, who proceeded to a riot. Upon the arrival of patrol cars at the scene, the participants allegedly threw firecrackers at the Police vehicles.

In the possession of a 20-year-old, five firecrackers and a folding club were found. The three youths were arrested for flagrant offences and are expected to appear before the Court today for the issuance of a detention order.

The case is being investigated by the Larnaca TAE.

A road accident occurred yesterday around 6.30 p.m. on Pindarou Street, in the center of Nicosia, involving a motorcycle and a car. There were two people on the motorcycle, and after the collision, the driver left the scene.

The passenger, aged 21, was seriously injured and was transported by ambulance to the Nicosia General Hospital, where he is hospitalized with multiple fractures.

During the investigation of the case, it was found that the motorcycle had previously been declared as stolen. The authorities continue the investigations to identify the driver and clarify the case.

Police patrols responded to dozens of incidents of firefighting and the use of firecrackers during the night, as part of the police operation to combat phenomena, nuisance, fire lighting and the use of firecrackers. In several cases, members of the Police were attacked by young people, while six arrests were made in the districts of Limassol and Larnaca.

A total of 233 inspections were carried out in parks, church enclosures and other open spaces, frequented by young people, in all provinces as part of the operation.

On several occasions, members of the police were attacked, by young people, who threw stones, firecrackers and even Molotov cocktails at them, without causing any injury.

The Police proceeded to the arrest of a total of six young people, in Limassol and Larnaca.

In Limassol, around 2.55 a.m. information was received that at the junction of Spyrou Kyprianou and Nikos Pattichi streets, there was a fire in tyres. Upon the arrival of the police officers at the scene, a number of people who were there fled. They were pursued by the members of the Police, resulting in the arrest of three of them.

These are three minors, who were handed over to their parents and will be summoned at a later stage to take testimony.

Also in Larnaca around 4 a.m. Members of the Police responded to a call for a fire outside a church. Upon their arrival at the scene, young faces threw firecrackers at them. The youths were pursued by the police, resulting in the arrest of three people. They are two 20-year-olds and a 19-year-old. A search of the vehicle of a 20-year-old man followed, where a number of firecrackers and offensive instruments were found and confiscated.

The three arrested were detained to facilitate the interrogations. Later today, they are expected to be brought before the Larnaca District Court for the issuance of a detention order.

In the meantime, the Fire Brigade was also on foot, with the biggest problem being located in the Larnaca district, where 32 out of a total of 51 fires were extinguished by arson of objects that broke out in the last 24 hours.

According to the spokesperson of the Fire Brigade, Andreas Kettis, "the Larnaca District was intensely active, especially in the early hours of the morning, in incidents that were manifested by young people with burning various items, plastic baskets, old tyres, useless objects, wood, etc. The fires broke out mainly in the early hours of the morning in various areas, such as Larnaca, Kiti, Tersefanou, Aradippou, Pyla and Kornos".

EMAK also assisted in the extinguishing operation, while a partial recall of personnel was carried out to strengthen the crews.
