Pafos Live 18 April 2025
Two persons complained today to members of the Hunting Service in the area of Akamas, who seem to have gone on illegal hunting.
Specifically, after evaluating specific information, members of the Service stopped and investigated a vehicle, in which two persons were on board and which was circulating suspiciously on a dirt road.
During the above check, an assembled shotgun was found inside the vehicle, for which the two persons did not have a possession license, as well as five full cartridges, three of which are of a prohibited type, since the pellets have a diameter larger than the permissible one and are usually used for poaching wild animals.

A fire broke out at 8:00pm on the evening of Holy Thursday at the Green Point in the Akamas Municipality area once again, while the Mayor of Akamas Marinos Lambrou, Kostas Voskos, Head of the Department of Environment in Paphos and representative of the Ecologists and Environmentalists, rushed to the scene.
In his statements to Mr. Lambrou, who went to the scene, said that the fires in the area are recurring and, as he notes, not at all random. Yesterday, Holy Thursday, he himself went to the Green Point with crews from the Municipality of Akamas, while a Fire Department vehicle immediately rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire.
At the Green Point, Mr. Lambrou continued, the teams of the Akamas Municipality that rushed in, such as excavators and a tanker, provided any assistance with the aim of extinguishing the fire.
A foul odour was caused at the scene, while the burnt materials were buried, he added.
When asked about this, Mr. Lambrou said that there are residences in the area at a distance of approximately 500 meters.
Andreas Evlavis, who took to the stage on behalf of the Environmentalists, stressed that the recurring incidents are not random. Unfortunately, he said, those who should have taken measures to avoid such phenomena did not take them.
For his part, Charalambos Theopemptou, chairman of the Parliament's Environment Committee, described the incident as unacceptable. He said that this is a point in the Pegeia area where materials have been collected for a long time with the aim of burning them. The Local Authorities are aware of this, describing the issue of burning the materials as unacceptable.
Mr. Theopemptou noted that all these materials must end up in landfill, noting that it is not possible to set fires when their number increases.
Fires, he said characteristically, are prohibited by both the Stockholm Convention and the Legislation.
In sensitive areas, such as these beautiful areas, fires cannot be caused in nature, especially without permits. Unfortunately, he observed, to avoid expenses they set fires, putting the area at risk by polluting the atmosphere, he concluded.

A Syrian citizen, who was judged by the authorities in July 2024 to be a "real, present and sufficient serious threat to national security", has been released by the Supreme Court, because he has been detained for more than a year without the prospect of deportation.
The 27 year old Syrian=, has been detained since March 2024. He arrived in Cyprus from Turkey, through occupied territories, and then, on 19.3.2024, submitted to the competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, an application for international protection, which is pending to this day. His wife is a holder of subsidiary protection. He is the father of a minor child, who lives with his wife in the district of Nicosia.
After the submission of the above application, as stated in a decision of Judge I. Ioannidis, information was received, according to a letter from the Aliens and Immigration Service, on the basis of which "the conclusion is drawn that the foreigner in question becomes a real, present and sufficient serious threat to both National Security and Public Order and Security. Therefore, a proposal is submitted that a deportation decree be issued against him on the basis of Article 29 of the Refugee Law Chapter 6, as well as a Detention Decree based on Article 14 of the Aliens and Immigration Law Chapter 105."
The foreigner's side requested the issuance of a warrant ordering his release, on the grounds that his detention became illegal due to the long period of time he has been detained. The Attorney General's side attributed the delay in his deportation to the fact that the applicant does not cooperate.
According to the Court, what is revealed, by the particular facts of the present case, is that if the requested warrant is not issued, the applicant will continue to be detained for a further, indefinite, period of time, without there being a reasonable prospect of his removal from the country.
In conclusion, the judge points out, having before me the long period of time during which the applicant continues to be detained, without the prospect of his deportation at this stage, taking into account the entire history of the case (including the inaction of the competent authorities), I find that, in the present case, there is a prolonged and unjustified period of detention.
This not only does not burden the applicant, because he does not wish to be repatriated, as the Attorney General's side suggests, but advocates his release. In other words, a balance between the rights of the State and the applicant, leads, in this case, to the issuance of the requested warrant.
It was the conclusion of the Court that the application is considered well-founded, justified and approved. The requested privileged warrant is issued. The competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus should immediately release the applicant. The successful applicant shall be ordered to pay the costs of the application as calculated by the Registrar and approved by the Court, unless agreed.
