Yesterday morning, during the daily study, carried out by Officers of the Game Service, on the movements of a number of eagles, which carried a geolocation and tracking device, which were placed in the framework of actions of the European Program LIFE Bonelli East Med, it was found that a Spotted Eagle was emitting a signal that it was dead.
According to an announcement, the members of the Service were immediately mobilized in order to collect the eagle and to examine the causes of death.
This particular bird was spotted at a short distance from a large fenced area of a house, in a community in the Paphos district and its approach was only possible through the fenced area of the house.
For this purpose, the announcement continues, the owner of the house was informed about it, but he did not show up at the site and did not cooperate with the members of the Game Service and the Paphos Police Directorate who were at the site. The whole behaviour of the owner of the space aroused suspicions and was the starting point for an extensive investigation, following a relevant court warrant, both in the house and in the premises included in the fenced area. Initially, the dead eagle was located, which seems to have died of poisoning due to its posture, while right next to it a dead half-eaten chicken was found which seems to have carried poison. A number of chicken chicks identical to the above were also found in the fenced area of the suspect and from which DNA samples were taken for control purposes. During the searches that followed at the home and premises of the person allegedly related to the case, a large number of presumptions were identified which refer to a series of serious violations of various legislations.
Specifically, the following were seized:
A dead Spotted Eagle, an endangered and strictly protected species that is a very important species of the wildlife of Cyprus,
Quantities of prohibited pesticides, which appear to have been purchased from the occupied territories, the possession and use of which is prohibited within the Republic,
Two (2) shotguns, for which the suspect did not have a license to possess while three other shotguns in his possession were not identified,
One (1) wild bird trapping net,
Three (3) iron traps for trapping wild birds,
Two (2) wire loops,
Forty-seven (47) limesticks,
Over seventy (70) wild birds without plumage,
Three (3) electronic devices for attracting wild birds through sound reproduction,
Sixty-five (65) complete cartridges whose possession is illegal either due to the type of cartridges or due to the fact that the calibre of the pellets they contain is larger than that determined by the relevant legislation, i.e. single-shot, nine-shot and fifteen-round cartridges which are usually used for the poaching of wild animals as well as a number of fireworks.
Our Service, in cooperation with the Paphos Police Department, is working intensively for a full investigation of the case and the documentation of the violations, with the aim of bringing those responsible to justice.
