Filenews 11 April 2025
Based on the amendments made to the Legislation governing out-of-court regulation and published in the Official Gazette of the Republic on 31/03/2025 (Annex I, Part I), the Police announces the following:
With regard to out-of-court fines for traffic offences, which are served from March 31, 2025, the following regulations apply:
Criminal proceedings against a person who has been served with an extrajudicial fine, which has not been paid, may be brought after the expiry of 105 days from the date of service of the fine, instead of 45 days, which was previously in force and related to the date of issue.
For the purposes of calculating the time for criminal prosecution, the date of service of the extrajudicial fine and not the date of its issuance is important.
A charge for an out-of-court fine that has not been paid, i.e. an increase of the fine by half, is imposed when the out-of-court fine is not paid in 90 days instead of 30 days, which was previously in force.
Extrajudicial fines issued for offences other than traffic offences (minor offences) remain the period of 15 days, after which if the extrajudicial fine is not paid, then the amount provided for is increased by half.
Citizens who are served with an out-of-court fine for traffic offences are invited to take seriously the new time limit for the repayment of extrajudicial fines, so that they can settle any outstanding fines in a timely manner, in case they wish to repay the out-of-court fine that may have been issued and concerns them.
The Police are already making all the arrangements from a technical point of view, so that relevant information is provided to the persons to whom an out-of-court fine is served, through a note that will be written on the out-of-court fine
