THE MUNICIPALITY OF PARALIMNI CALLS FOR THE IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF THE SEVEN MIGRANT STRUCTURES FROM ITS TOURIST ZONE

 Filenews 28 March 2025

In its complaint, the Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia characterizes as unacceptable the handling of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the International Organization for Migration in relation to the operation of seven migrant accommodation facilities within its tourist zone.

As stated in a relevant announcement, this serious issue was raised at a meeting held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, with the participation of the Police, the Social Welfare Office and the International Organization for Migration.

The presence of these structures in a predominantly tourist area causes a chain of problems, as increased incidents of delinquent behaviour are recorded. According to the Police, increased incidents of burglaries and thefts were recorded in the wider area of our Municipality by people residing in similar structures during last year's tourist season of 2024.

The tourism and economic development of our country cannot be jeopardized due to incomplete planning and wrong decisions. Our region is a key pillar of the tourism product of Cyprus, gathering almost 50% of the total tourist arrivals and contributing a huge percentage to the GDP of Cyprus. Maintaining the quality of life of residents and, above all, the safety of visitors must be an absolute priority.

We call on those responsible to assume their responsibilities and proceed immediately with the removal of these structures from the tourist zone. At the same time, we demand a substantial strengthening of policing and the immediate implementation of effective measures to protect residents and businesses.

The Municipality of Paralimni – Deryneia will continue to claim solutions that ensure sustainable tourism development and social cohesion. It is the duty of all of us to protect our land, maintain peace and prosperity, and ensure that our region remains a safe and attractive destination for visitors.
