'HOW IT MOVED' EXHIBITION AT THE PAPHOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Paphos Archaeological Museum
29 March - 29 May
Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 09:00 – 16:00, closed on Mondays.
The Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture announces the opening of the art exhibition entitled “How it Moved”. The art exhibition is the result of a collaboration between two visual artists and a poet, who explore the perception and representation of the body of Aphrodite through an archaeological perspective.
Their works examine the worship of the Great Goddess of Cyprus, who in Paphos is presented as a conical Baitylos, and the worship of Aphrodite as it evolved in the Hellenistic period when she was identified with the Goddess of Greek mythology, as well as the way in which the mythology of the Goddess is connected to and has changed since the modern era.
Their research focuses on the worship of the Goddess and the history of the sanctuary of Palaepaphos, as well as the surrounding settlements, which were one of the central hubs of the copper trade routes from the foothills of the Troodos.
The sanctuary was a place of worship, but also a symbol of wealth and power, founded in a strategic location. In the centuries that followed, the sanctuary experienced periods of colonization, while during the Greco-Roman period it underwent ideological transformations, acquiring new political identities under the influence of the colonizers.
The Great Goddess transformed over time, manifesting her divine essence in various ways.
Her countless names, her multiple forms, continue to inspire to this day.
Participating artists: Katerina Neophytidou, Grace Schwindt, Stella Voskaridou.
The exhibition ‘How She Moved’ is funded by the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus (Department of Contemporary Culture) and supported by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.
Thanks to Eftychia Zachariou, Efstathios Raptou and Margarita Kouali from the Department of Antiquities for their full support, as well as Victoria Leonidou for the graphics.
