The detention of the 50-year-old suspect from Iran in connection with the case of deception of a 33-year-old woman, from which he extracted €12,000, was ordered this morning (31/3) by the Limassol District Court.
Initially, the judge, having in her hands the report of the Welfare Office on the financial situation of the suspect, rejected the request for legal aid, noting that the suspect arrived in Cyprus – as she said – 3 months ago, having the amount of €3,000. Because he did not justify where he spent his money, she said that, for the present case, he can cover the legal costs. Although legal aid was not approved, the lawyer who appeared at the proceedings represented her.
In relation to the detention request for the fraud case, the Court approved the request of the Police and ordered his detention for a period of 7 days.
According to the facts of the case, the 33-year-old complainant reported that, while she was in Iran, she was chatting online with an Iranian with a specific name, who – as it was later established – was the suspect. The latter was in Cyprus and she asked him for help to go to Germany. Their conversations took place via the internet and electronic applications. As the complainant said, she agreed to pay him the sum of €6,000 in Iran and then another €6,000 when she arrived in Cyprus, before going to Germany.
She also said that she gave the first €6,000 in Iran to a relative of the suspect, who gave her the plane tickets with which she would travel, as well as an invitation with photos of real estate, indicating that the purpose of her visit to Cyprus was to buy a property.
On 13/11/2024, the complainant travelled to Istanbul and then, the next day, she travelled to Cyprus through the occupied areas. She remained in the occupied areas and the next day (15/11/2024) she was informed through an application that a man of African origin would pick her up to take her somewhere. At 18:00 of the same day, she was picked up by an African along with other persons, driving a specific car, and after half an hour they stopped in a deserted spot near the airport and got off.
There was already a Pakistani man with his face covered there, who spoke briefly with the driver in English before leaving, as well as another unknown person. After receiving instructions, they went in another car waiting for them where another African was in it.
They boarded it and after about 10 minutes, they arrived in a village. There they were picked up by a white car, driven by an Arab, while the passenger was a Pakistani, and took them to a restaurant, which – as it was later found out – was located in Engomi.
As the complainant reported, she informed the suspect via WhatsApp that she had arrived in Cyprus, and he told her to go to Pournara, which she did.
The next day, when she woke up in Pournara, the 50-year-old suspect went and found her, and she gave him the remaining €6,000 in cash. She asked him when she would go to Germany and he told her that she would have to wait until August. When she learned that she couldn't go immediately, she contacted the suspect about what she was going to do, and he gave her a Cypriot number to find a house. The complainant remained in Pournara until 30/12/2024.
According to what the complainant complains, the 50-year-old suspect sent her photos of fake Spanish passports. The complainant left Pournara and went to Limassol, where she stayed on the beach. That same evening, she heard some people speaking Persian and approached them. She spoke to them, said she wanted to find a home, and they gave her a phone number, telling her that they would help her. Eventually, she managed to find a home in Limassol, where she settled.
There, by chance, she found out that under her apartment, the suspect remains. Since then, she had been in contact with the 50-year-old to go to Germany and realized that he was making fun of her. She also asked him to return her €12,000, and he threatened her that he would send people to kill her.
The complainant only knew the suspect's first name and gave details of his residential address. Following this, on 26/03/2025, the Limassol Police Department applied for the issuance of a search warrant for the suspect's home, which was rejected by the Court.
On 27/03/2025, the complainant sent the Limassol TAE, through her lawyer, in electronic form, photos of three of the persons who mediated for her trip and stay, including the suspect.
The suspect's place of residence was placed under surveillance by the Police, who located the suspect on 27/03/2025, along with three other compatriots. Their home was searched with his written consent, without detecting anything, except their phones, which were taken for examination. Subsequently, everyone was taken to the Limassol TAE for interrogation.
The suspect, being questioned in writing, refused to cooperate with the investigators of the Limassol TAE.
For the case, two more persons are being sought, while about 23 testimonies are expected to be received.
The suspect is being investigated for the offences of conspiracy to commit a felony, forgery, circulation of a forged document, extortion of property by false representations and assisting the illegal entry, transit and stay in the Republic, which were committed between November 2024 and March 2025.
