CHANGES TO PROVISIONAL DRIVING LICENCES FROM 1 JANUARY 2026

The Department of Road Transport (TUM) recalls that as of January 1, 2026new regulations for driving with an apprentice's license, concerning specific categories of vehicles, come into force.

In a statement, the TFT urges holders of an apprentice's driving licence in the affected categories, who are interested in obtaining a regular driving licence, to proceed with the relevant procedure in a timely manner.

Restrictions on driving with an apprentice's licence

From 1 January 2026holders of a driving licence for an apprentice of categories AM, A1, A2 and A shall not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle of those categories on roads or other public places, unless one of the following exceptions applies:

  1. Training of learner drivers, subject to the following conditions:
    • The apprentice must be followed and supervised by a licensed driving instructor for the respective category.
    • The instructor is on board another vehicle of categories AM, A1, A2 or A.
  2. During an examination of a candidate for obtaining a certificate of competency.
  3. Driving in the context of authorized training with a training vehicle of the Police, the Fire Brigade or the National Guard.
