43% REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS IN ONE YEAR - THEY NOW AMOUNT TO 680

 Filenews 29 March 2025

The number of unaccompanied minors in Cyprus decreased by 43% compared to the previous year, the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare announced. According to the latest figures, their total number now stands at 680, up from about 1,200 in March 2024.

The Deputy Ministry notes that this reduction has allowed for a more effective management of issues related to minors' access to health, education and creative employment services. At the same time, the uniform distribution of children in small residential units throughout the provinces was facilitated, in order to avoid ghettoization phenomena.

The announcement also clarifies that in 2024 the use of hotel units for the accommodation of unaccompanied minors was terminated, a measure that had been adopted in previous years due to increased migratory pressure.

With regard to today's reports by the Municipality of Paralimni – Deryneia on the presence of accommodation structures in the tourist zone, the Deputy Ministry clarifies that a total of less than 25 minors live in this area, distributed in six residences. These structures are managed by the International Organization for Migration, in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry, which is in communication with the Mayor on the issue.

It should be noted that the majority of unaccompanied minors are currently accommodated either with relatives or in foster families, a fact that is attributed to the acceleration and simplification of foster care procedures by the Social Welfare Services. The number of children staying in accommodation facilities has decreased by 60% within a year.

The Deputy Ministry emphasizes that it continues to work to meet the needs of unaccompanied minors, in close cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, which is gradually assuming relevant responsibilities, utilizing European funds to strengthen policies to support this vulnerable group.
