TOYOTA REPLACES 19,000 TAKATA AIRBAGS AS GREY IMPORTS POSE CHALLENGE

 in-cyprus 11 February 2025

Toyota announced that 85% of pending Takata airbag recalls in Cyprus involve grey imports, vehicles brought into the country outside official dealership networks.

The automaker has already replaced more than 19,000 Takata airbags in Cyprus as part of its decade-long recall campaigns.

Toyota is working with authorities to develop solutions for grey import vehicles, which were imported to Cyprus without the company’s knowledge or involvement.

Vehicle owners can verify if their cars are affected through the Department of Road Transport website. Different procedures apply for European-specification vehicles and those from markets such as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia.

The company acknowledged significant delays in processing requests due to high volume but assured it is working to expedite responses.

Toyota has established a dedicated customer service line for recall-related queries at +357 22285700.

Owners of European-specification vehicles can initiate the replacement process through Toyota Cyprus’s official website, while those with non-European models must follow a separate procedure.

The Department of Road Transport launched an urgent recall campaign affecting approximately 82,000 vehicles with faulty Takata airbags and brakes, giving owners eight months to complete necessary repairs or face vehicle registration suspension.

The Takata airbag defect, caused by a chemical component that can deteriorate in hot conditions, risks explosive deployment that could project metal fragments into vehicle cabins, potentially causing serious injury to occupants.

It is estimated that at least 27 deaths and hundreds of injuries worldwide have been attributed to the defective Takata airbags.

In Cyprus, at least three deaths have been linked to the faulty Takata airbags.
