THEY SHOT A KITTEN WITH AN AIRGUN IN LIMASSOL - 'IT WAS A FAVOURITE ANIMAL OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD'

 Filenews 20 February 2025

Shock and horror causes an incident of animal abuse in Limassol, where a kitten was found shot with an air gun in the area of Omonoia, near Sarantaporou Street.

According to the Green Movement, the metal pellet hit the animal's spinal cord, causing irreparable damage. The vet who examined the unfortunate kitten found that his condition is irreversible and that he cannot survive.

Reactions and condemnation of the crime

The kitten, named Pink, was a favourite animal of the neighbourhood, which was cared for by local residents. This inhumane incident has caused outrage and indignation.

The coordinator of the Action Group for Animals of the Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation, Anthi Mouzouri, spoke about another horrific crime against animals, pointing out:

"Killing a defenceless creature in cold blood without hesitation is a reprehensible act that should alarm society, stakeholders and the State. We call for the full investigation of the incident, the implementation of the law and the bringing of the perpetrator to justice, so that he can be punished as provided by law. Society has reached its limits. It will no longer tolerate crimes against animals going unpunished."

Risk to public safety

The Green Movement stresses that the incident raises serious concerns about the possession and use of air guns. Such weapons can also be used against humans, which makes stricter control and surveillance imperative.

"The fact that the incident took place in a densely populated area demonstrates that we could also have human casualties," the Movement warns.

Reflection on the Animal Police

On Tuesday, an attempt was made to contact the Animal Police, however, as alleged, once again, it was found that she was assigned duties foreign to her mission.

The Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation calls for the immediate restructuring of the Animal Police and the creation of an independent body, with full means and powers to investigate such incidents.

Police investigations – Public call

The Limassol Animal Police is already investigating the incident and is conducting investigations in the area to identify the perpetrator.

Authorities are urging anyone who knows anything to contact 97 849766 and provide any information to help solve the case.
