From August onwards, solutions will be put in place to address water scarcity in the Pafos district, as reported on Tuesday by the competent services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, which were invited to the meeting of the House Standing Committee on Agriculture that examined ex officio the problems of water supply and irrigation, following the destruction of the desalination plant in Kouklia and the leak in the Mavrokolymbos dam.
Members of the Committee made an urgent call for support for the district of Pafos, both in terms of the needs of crops and in order to meet the increased water needs that occur during the peak months of the tourism industry.
As AKEL MP Valentinos Fakontis said in statements after the meeting, the current data predicts "a dramatic summer in both water supply and irrigation" and called on the Ministry of Agriculture to assume its responsibilities. "Today we did not hear solutions, we did not hear a strategy, nor any comprehensive plan that will address the effects of the water problem in Paphos," he said.
According to the briefing they had, he stated that the desalination plant in Kouklia will be repaired, according to the best-case scenario, in August-September and that the mobile desalination plant to be built in Pegeia is placed in October to November. He added that no answers were given on when the Mavrokolymbos dam would be corrected. "This situation raises huge concerns for both MPs and citizens of the Pafos District," he noted.
