The Limassol Permanent Assize Court today imposed a 10-year prison sentence on a 33-year-old defendant in connection with a 2kg cocaine trafficking case. The 33-year-old was found guilty after pleading guilty to charges of possession and possession with intent to supply to other persons. It is noted that two other persons are also accused in the case.

According to the judgment of the Assize Court and the evidence put before it, the accused acted as a drug transporter on behalf of a third person. Although he was not the mastermind of the operation, he did not name the other person, fearing reprisals against him and his family. As noted in the decision, the 33-year-old participated in the execution of the plan to receive and transport the 2 kilos of cocaine, with the intention of supplying it to another person, obtaining financial benefit, as the amount of €700 would be deducted from his debt. "The above demonstrates that the role of the accused was not insignificant and peripheral, but basic and necessary in drug trafficking," the ruling said.

The Court took into account the fact that the 33-year-old had no criminal record, his immediate admission before the Court and his cooperation with the Police.

According to the defendant's lawyer, the reasons that prompted him to commit the offences are related to his unfavorable financial situation. He told the court that the defendant had borrowed €20,000 from a loan shark, who was also the person who supplied him with the drugs. Unable to repay his debt, he gave in to this person's proposal to transport the drugs for a fee, with the amount of €700 deducted from his debt.

According to the facts of the case, on 11/09/2024 the three defendants, aged 33, 35 and 22, were arrested following an operation by YKAN Limassol. Authorities had information that another person would pick up drugs on behalf of a third party on a motorcycle.

During the operation, the 35-year-old's vehicle was placed under surveillance and seen approaching a motorcycle in a fast food restaurant parking lot in the Zakaki area. Then a third vehicle appeared. The surveillance continued, and at one point the 33-year-old motorcycle driver was seen placing a bag on his back and departing. The members of the YKAN intercepted him and the accused tried to flee on foot, throwing a school bag on the ground. A check on the bag found two packages containing cocaine weighing a total of 2kg of cocaine. The drivers of the two vehicles fled the scene but were later arrested.
