BANANA PLANTATIONS WILL NOT DRY OUT

 Pafos Live 4 February 2025

The water development department moved quickly managing to divert quantities of water from the Pafos water project, the Asprokremmos dam, to the western low area of Pafos, mainly the areas of Kissonerga and Pegeia.

These areas, both about 250 banana producers and owners of other permanent plantations, mainly avocados and citrus fruits, received water for irrigation of their plantations from the Mavrokolympos dam, which has been emptied after the damage that occurred in the dam's evacuation tunnel.

It is noted that based on the decision taken by the WDD, the owners of permanent plantations will be granted only 50% of the necessary quantity of water in order to simply maintain the plantations, while the quantities that will be granted for seasonal crops will be minimal.

Regarding the repair of the dam, the WDD is preparing a quantity sheet for the order of the materials that will be required, since, in addition to the replacement of the pipes, the way of inspection of the dam will be modified in general, which will allow in the future the repair of any issues, even when there are quantities of water in the dam. The works for the repair of the dam, according to sources in the WDD, are not planned immediately, since the sludge in the reservoir will have to dry.
