PAPHOS-POLIS MOTORWAY - RESTARTS AT A COST OF €330 million

Following the termination of the employment last November of the contractor for the construction of the first section of the first phase of the Pafos-Polis Chrysochous motorway, the Department of Public Works proceeded rapidly with the procedures for the re-announcement of the contract and the completion of the project. The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadis, during his visit to the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, had a meeting with the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofis, as well as deputy mayors of the area, at the Town Hall. During the meeting, he referred to the significant progress recorded in the actions for the construction of the Pafos – Polis Chrysochous motorway, where the whole project will cost €330 million. plus VAT.

During the Minister's visit, it became clear that the construction of this approximately 31 km long project is proceeding in two main phases, with the aim of enhancing transport and improving road safety in the region.

The first phase of the construction of the motorway includes two sections, of which the first, 15.5 km long, has already entered into a new tender process that will proceed at a rapid pace, so that an agreement can be signed and completed within 3 years. This is the project whose contract was terminated last November. The design and construction provides for two traffic lanes from Agia Marinouda to Stroumbi, at a cost of €96 million. In the future, the road will be upgraded to a four-lane highway. The additional two lanes will cost €75 million and are expected to be completed in 2032.

The second section, from Stroumbi to Polis Chrysochous, 15 km long, will be announced in the first quarter of 2026 as planned. Completion is foreseen in 2031 and will include four lanes, three interchanges, two viaducts, underpasses and overpasses to restore and ensure access to local roads.

The project foresees the construction of four lanes at a cost of approximately €129 million plus VAT, compared to the initial two-lane proposal estimated at around €60 million plus VAT, will breathe new life into traffic by strengthening the road connection of the area.

The motorway will also include the connection of Pafos from Mesogi and entrance/exit to Marathounta to facilitate use by more communities at a total cost of €30 million and will be completed in 2030.

The Pafos – Polis Chrysochous motorway is a project of strategic importance, which will facilitate access to the area of Polis Chrysochous, enhance tourism and economic development and upgrade road safety.

According to the competent Minister, despite the delays that have occurred, the Ministry undertakes the construction of the project with the aim of providing a modern, safe and functional road network.

"Upon completion, this motorway will not only contribute to better connecting areas, but also to improving the quality of life of residents and visitors. At the same time, the upgrades to the existing road ensure an immediate, improved solution for those who use this road daily," he added.
