A 23-year-old Nigerian woman who was accused of causing grievous bodily harm to her roommate was not spared jail. The 23-year-old threw the hot water from the bucket while cleaning the bathroom of their home,  into her roommate's face, causing burns to 12% of her body.

The Limassol District Court sentenced the defendant to an immediate prison sentence of three years, after being found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The hearing was long and arduous, however, the Prosecution managed to prove the case.

In its judgment, the Court stated, inter alia, that it recognises the seriousness of the offences faced by the accused, the injuries inflicted on the victim, as well as the permanent damage caused to her. As mitigating factors, he took into account the defendant's clean criminal record, her young age, as well as the remorse she expressed through her lawyer.

The horrific events took place on March 22, 2024, in the apartment where the accused, the victim and the victim's friend lived. That day, the 23-year-old defendant was cleaning the bathroom while the victim's friend wanted to enter to shave and go to work as a delivery man. The 23-year-old, however, wouldn't let anyone into the bathroom at the time, leading to a fight between the roommate and her boyfriend.

At one point, the defendant, in a frantic state, took the bucket of hot water with which she was cleaning the bathroom and threw it on her roommate's face, causing burns to her face and neck, which caused permanent damage.

The case was handled, on behalf of the Legal Service, by Public Prosecutor A', Yiannos Argyrou.
