The Limassol District Court today imposed a suspended sentence on the 48-year-old accused father, whose then 6-year-old twins were found traces of cocaine in their system. The incident occurred in May 2021, when the father had used drugs in an area of their residence, exposing the minors to danger, after they leaned on a table where there were substance residues.

The Limassol Court, in a closed proceedings, today gave a second chance to the accused, who at an earlier stage had admitted the 6 charges he faced. The charges included unlawful possession of a Class A controlled drug, unlawful use, mistreatment of a child under the age of 16 and negligent acts. The 48-year-old also faced drug supply charges, which were dropped and he was acquitted.

As Filenews is aware, the Court imposed several concurrent prison sentences, the longest being 8 months on the charge of illegal possession of drugs. However, exercising his discretion, he gave the defendant a second chance, suspending his prison sentences for a period of 3 years from today.

According to the same information, the Court took into account several mitigating factors mentioned during the mitigation speech of the 48-year-old defendant, Alexis Neocleous. In particular, remorse and confession were taken into account, as was the 48-year-old's cooperation with the police. The circumstances of the offences, the length of time that has elapsed since they were committed, and it was recognised that this was an isolated and unfortunate incident.

It is recalled that the case came to light following a complaint by a chemical laboratory owner in Limassol. The parents had gone to a chemical laboratory with their children in mid-May 2021, asking for the minors to be examined in a laboratory test for drug detection, as the little girl felt unwell and exhibited erratic behaviour.

The chemist contacted the mother by phone the next day, who informed her that the results of the tests detected traces of cocaine in the 6-year-olds. In fact, he advised her to contact the police immediately. Instead, the mother took her children and fled Cyprus, with the chemist himself filing a complaint with the authorities. The father was subsequently arrested, saying in a statement that he had used drugs outside his home, but forgot to lock the door, causing the twins to come into contact and taste cocaine residues left on the table.
