A request by the 49-year-old German woman, accused of usurping Greek Cypriot land in the occupied areas, to be released on parole was rejected a short while ago.

Today the case was set before the Nicosia Assize Court for hearing. However, her lawyer, Sotiris Argyrou, objected to his client's further detention.

Among other things, he raised the issue of translation, which according to his positions affected the defense and rights of the 49-year-old (translation of witness material and problem in communication with his client).

In addition, he raised the issue of degrading and inhuman treatment of the 49-year-old based on a report by the European Commission on Degrading Treatment of Degrading Prisoners (CPT), which shows that there is overcrowding in Central Prisons.

The Assize Court, however, on the basis of the decision which it announced after adjournment, was not convinced, ruling that there was no differentiating factor to order her to be released on parole.

The President of the Assize Court, Nikolas Georgiadis, reading the judgment, referred to the circumstances of the present case, to case law, saying, among other things, in the conclusion of the verdict that "we therefore consider the objection to further detention unfounded".

The Assize Court also dealt with the issue of the translator raised once again by Mr Argyrou. It issued detailed instructions on how to consult with the Registry in order to purchase services and cover them.

The hearing was set to begin on 5/3/2025.
