 Filenews 18 December 2024

A bill regulating the registration, operation and control of biomedical and specialized biomedical laboratories was approved today by the Council of Ministers.

In his statements after the conclusion of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Health Michalis Damianos noted the following:

"The Council of Ministers approved today a particularly important bill for the health sector in our country, which for more than 10 years, was at the stage of discussion between the involved bodies and services. This is the Bill that regulates the registration, operation and control of biomedical and specialized biomedical laboratories".

The aim of the bill is clearly none other than to ensure the quality of the provided Health Services to the citizens of our country.

The bill will regulate the operation of biomedical laboratories and in addition specialized laboratories that provide highly complex services and require specialized scientific and technical knowledge.

The bill defines the necessary infrastructure in areas and equipment and staffing for the optimal operation and quality assurance of services to the patient with the mandatory accreditation of the methods used.

It is noted that the Ministry of Health, as the supervisory authority of the health sector, will be able, through the designated supervisory mechanism, to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the proposed legislation.

In addition to the bill on clinical laboratories, the Council of Ministers approved today a bill regulating the profession of biomedical scientists, i.e. scientists who staff biomedical laboratories as well as specialized biomedical laboratories, through the establishment of the Council for the Registration of Qualified Directors and Biomedical Scientists.

Concluding, Mr. Damianos appealed to the House of Representatives to proceed with the adoption of the bills already submitted by the Ministry of Health, noting at the same time that in the near future the Ministry will submit to Parliament other, very important bills.
