CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 14 December 2024

The defendant Evros Demetriou, a well-known youtuber who has been tormenting the judiciary for years with his notorious case, does not want to comply with the Court and the law. The defendant had published material without the consent of police officers, who stopped him for screening in January 2017. The video was posted on social media in which the defendant filmed the members of the police and insisted that they answer him if it was a question or an order.

The case, as Filenews is aware, was set for hearing last month on 7/11. Following the execution of an arrest warrant, the accused appeared in court and explained why he did not appear earlier in order to start the hearing. At the time, he had told the Court that 9 December was an appropriate date for him to attend, citing various personal problems that would not allow him to start the case more quickly.

The Court, respecting the defendant's wishes, set December 9 for a hearing, which date it desired. On that day, the examiner of the case appeared in court to testify, however, the accused did not appear, as a result of which the judge of the Limassol District Court ordered the issuance of a judicial arrest warrant against him.

The case was rescheduled for today (13/12) to check the arrest warrant and hear the case, however, the well-known youtuber did not appear in court today either.

The judge stated that the arrest warrant had not yet been executed, asking that the competent police officer be summoned to the Court to explain the reasons for its non-execution. The next hearing was set for next week and it is not excluded that additional measures will be taken to ensure the presence of the accused at the trial.

The defendant faces a slew of charges relating to the Personal Data Act. In particular, it faces the offences of interception of private communication, disclosure of private communication content to other persons, refusal of presence at a place and time designated by investigators, disobedience to legal orders, as well as reception and transmission of personal data, in violation of the Personal Data Law.

The case was registered in 2018 and since then the accused, who is not represented by a lawyer, seems to constantly cause obstacles to the process, which constantly receives postponements, both with his constant absence and with his behaviour.

The accused teacher who admitted to sexually abusing an underage student 20 years ago, was taken to prison. This is another shocking case that was brought to justice after the victim after almost two decades found the courage to talk about the abuse he suffered when he was a minor, and to report the criminal behaviour he had received.

As Filenews is aware, the case was registered for trial in camera, before the Permanent Assize Court of Nicosia in 2021. Just recently, the accused professor wanted to change his answer and plead guilty to the charges he faced for sexual abuse of a minor, which falls under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Sexual Exploitation of Minors Law of 2000 (before it was repealed) since they concern offences committed 20 years ago. Information on our website states that this was not an isolated incident.

Following the accused's admission, the Nicosia Assize Court imposed today (13/12) a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence on various charges, sending the former professor to the Central Prison. Such cases, as well as related convictions, send multiple messages to society, underlining that victims must report such acts, regardless of the time that has elapsed.
