DOUBLE YELLOW WEATHER WARNING

 Filenews 23 November 2024

Weak low pressure is affecting the area, while from tonight, a cold air mass is expected, accompanied by temporarily very strong to strong winds. Vertical temperature drop.

A yellow warning for isolated severe thunderstorms for tonight from 22:00 initially in the west and will be a quick passage to the island and leave behind a cold mass that will drop temperatures to low levels. The warning is until dawn on Sunday.

However, a second yellow warning for strong to stormy winds is in place from dawn Sunday until Monday morning.

The weather in detail:

Weak low pressure is affecting the area, while from tonight, a cold air mass is expected, accompanied by temporarily very strong to strong winds.

Today, locally increased clouds will be observed from time to time. The winds will initially blow mainly northeast to southeast, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, to later become mainly southwestern, of the same intensity. The sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will rise around 24 degrees in the interior and coasts and 14 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will be partly cloudy and temporarily mostly cloudy, with localised showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. The winds will initially blow mainly southwest, moderate to strong 4 to 5 Beaufort to later become southwest to northwest, strong to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent to gradually become in the west and north, turbulent. The temperature will drop to 10 degrees in the interior, around 12 degrees on the coast and 4 degrees in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form locally.

On Sunday, the weather will become mostly clear in most areas with a few local clouds, but mainly in the north and mountains there will be increased clouds from time to time, which may give isolated rain in the north or light snowfall in the Troodos area after noon.

During the evening hours, the weather will be mostly clear in most areas with a few local clouds, however, temporarily increased clouds mainly in the north, east and mountains may give a few isolated rains in the north and east while in the higher mountains from about 1200 meters and above, any phenomena will be in the form of snow, with local light snow cover; The probability of rain during the day ranges from 20-25% in most areas and in Troodos (1900 meters) to 40%, while in the evening, the probability of rain ranges from 10-25% in most areas and in Troodos (1900 meters) to 50%.

The temperature will plummet, to range around 3-6 degrees Celsius below normal for the season, while in the mountains it will fluctuate around 4-7 degrees Celsius below normal for the season, reaching around 16 degrees Celsius in Nicosia, around 17 to 19 degrees Celsius on the coast (depending on the area) and around 1 degree Celsius in Troodos (1900 meters).

On Sunday and Monday, the weather will be partly cloudy, while isolated showers are not excluded, mainly in the east and north, as well as snow or sleet in the higher mountains and locally in the lower mountains. On Tuesday, locally increased clouds will be observed intermittently. From Sunday morning the wind field is expected to strengthen significantly and winds will blow fierce and on the coast until stormy.
The temperature will drop noticeably on Sunday, to fluctuate well below the average climatic values, while on Monday and Tuesday it is not expected to change significantly.

Yellow warning for high winds

Strong to stormy northerly winds are expected to affect the island during the warning. In the interior, winds will blow fierce 7 Beaufort (and temporarily in the windward parts of the interior up to windy 8 Beaufort), with gusts reaching locally 8 or 9 Beaufort while on the windward coast, windward mountainous / semi-mountainous and mountain peaks will blow fierce to windy 7-8 Beaufort, with gusts reaching locally 9 Beaufort and possibly transiently up to 10 Beaufort mainly on mountain tops.

Due to the strong to stormy winds that are expected to affect our region, it is possible to create problems mainly in the road network, due to felling trees or wind-drifting objects, power outages and isolated damage to agricultural crops and property, while the public is urged to be especially careful not to put themselves in danger.

Valid from: 02:00 am, 24/11/2024. Until 12:00 am, 25/11/2024

What does "yellow warning" mean?

The hazard level 'Yellow' means that the weather is potentially dangerous and the weather events that have been predicted are not uncommon, but caution is needed regarding activities exposed to meteorological hazards. Also, frequent information is needed about the expected weather conditions and avoidance of unnecessary travel.

In particular, in areas where the above phenomena are in progress, citizens are invited to:

• Secure objects that in case they are swept away by severe weather phenomena may cause damage or injuries.

• Avoid passing under large trees, under posted signs and generally from areas where light objects (eg flower pots, broken glass, etc.) may detach and fall to the ground (eg under balconies).

• Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events.

• Follow the police announcements of the road network.
