Filenews

The 16-year-old who was driving the stolen vehicle that was involved on November 13 in a traffic accident on Artemis Avenue in Larnaca, which resulted in the fatal injury of 18-year-old Giulia Mihaela Vasile from Romania, was brought before the Larnaca District Court for the purpose of registering the case.

The indictment against the minor foreigner, who has been employed many times in the past by the Police for theft and burglary, is very heavy. Specifically, he faces 8 charges of causing death by negligence, theft, conspiracy to commit a felony, leaving a scene and a series of traffic offenses such as driving without a license and safety certificate and without a seat belt.

The case was set for November 29 before the Larnaca District Court, a date on which the minor will answer whether or not he pleads guilty. Until then, the 16-year-old will remain in custody, in a specially designed area, at the Central Prison. It is noted that the proceedings before the Court are held in camera.

According to Filenews, the 17-year-old co-driver of the fatal vehicle, who also fled the scene, and the owner of the car for leaving it unattended (with the keys in the ignition) will also be prosecuted. It is noted that the vehicle was stolen from an apartment building a few hours before the accident.

The car crash happened around 7:20 on Wednesday, November 13. The saloon vehicle, allegedly driven by the 16-year-old, was heading from the roundabout of the old GSZ to the traffic lights of Faneromeni. At some point on the road, under circumstances that are being investigated, the vehicle deviated from its course and climbed the pavement. Then he followed a crazy course and crashed successively into a traffic sign and two trees.

The unfortunate 18-year-old, who was in the back seat, on the passenger side, died instantly. Driver and front passenger fled the scene, while an 18-year-old man sitting in the back seat was slightly injured.

The 16-year-old was located and arrested at noon the next day, while the 17-year-old co-driver was located last Friday and appears not to be related to the theft of the vehicle

The Limassol Permanent Assize Court today imposed a 10-year prison sentence on a 35-year-old man for a case of trafficking hard drugs, specifically cocaine. The defendant was convicted after a hearing, as he was found guilty of offences relating to possession and trafficking of drugs of categories A and B, as well as money laundering.

This is a case of a cocaine trafficking ring, which was dismantled by the members of the Limassol YKAN. In addition to the 35-year-old, three other Nigerians have been charged in the case, who earlier admitted the serious charges they faced. However, they were given a shorter prison sentence by the Court.

According to the facts of the case, the three Nigerians had arrived illegally on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus in 2023, in order to set up a hard drug trafficking network together with the 35-year-old, who resided in Cyprus, had been registered as an asylum seeker and was receiving benefits from the state.

The organised ring, which smuggled cocaine to Limassol, operated in a residence in Limassol. The YKAN raided the premises on August 10, 2023, where a quantity of cocaine of 595 grams was found, as well as a customer list with various handwritten notes including names, quantities and amounts of money due. During the search of the house, in addition to cocaine, a quantity of cannabis was found, while two nylon packages with 25 grams of cocaine and 15 grams of cannabis were found in the yard. Under the balcony were found two precision electronic scales with traces of narcotics. Various small sums of money in the possession of the accused were also seized.

Two men from France, aged 22 and 20, were handcuffed for illegal possession of property, investigators of the Larnaca ICF passed.

The suspects, who appeared to have particularly expensive tastes, were in possession of mobile phones, watches, jewellery and four suitcases with designer clothes bearing their tags.

Police investigations showed that the suspects extracted what they found in their possession through bank card fraud, which they used in various shops in Larnaca. Those arrested, so far, give no explanation for the property found in their possession.

Today they were brought before the Larnaca District Court, which ordered their detention for a period of seven days.

Police investigations are ongoing, as there are similar complaints from shops in Nicosia that may be related to the action of the suspects.

A 17-year-old person was arrested yesterday on a court warrant and detained to facilitate investigations in relation to the attempted murder case involving two persons, aged 24 and 16, committed in a park in Nicosia on 18.11.2024.

Police are awaiting the green light from doctors to take a full statement from the minor to know why they fought and why the young man pulled a knife injuring the two Syrians.

The injured, according to Filenews, after being stabbed sought help at a nearby kiosk, where the employee informed the authorities while providing first aid.

The arrest of three persons proceeded to the YKAN Headquarters in Limassol after an operation that took place on Friday afternoon in a parking lot of a beach hotel, where a quantity of drugs of about 10 kilos was found and confiscated.

In particular, information was received about a contraband of large quantities of drugs, with the YKAN Headquarters placing specific persons under discreet surveillance and setting up a business in a hotel parking lot in the coastal area. During the surveillance, three vehicles were located.

Officers intercepted the suspects, located and seized a large quantity of narcotics.

Five kilograms of cocaine and five kilograms of cannabis were arrested, while three people, two men and one woman, two of whom are known to the authorities, were arrested.

Update:  YKAN is convinced that a drug trafficking ring has been dismantled following yesterday's operation.

The authorities targeted the 33-year-old suspect from Nicosia, who was placed under close surveillance by members of the YKAN who saw him loading the drugs into his vehicle on Friday afternoon, thus leading to the dismantling of the entire ring.

The three suspects were brought before the Limassol District Court on Saturday morning for a detention order.

The lawyers representing them, Dimitris Sergeias for the 1st, Thanasis Athanasiou for the 2nd and Loizos Neophytou for the 3rd suspect, objected to the eight-day detention request requested by the Police, asking for it to be limited to six days. The Court, after hearing both sides, ordered their detention for a period of six days.

According to the facts of the case, the 2nd suspect had been placed in the frame of the YKAN for days, since after the arrest of his brother two months ago for a case of 22 kilos of drugs in Nicosia, following information that he had undertaken to distribute large quantities of drugs.

YKAN received information that the 33-year-old would go to Limassol to transport and trade drugs to the 50-year-old suspect. In fact, he was placed under discreet surveillance and was seen outside the residence in Paliometocho placing a travel suitcase where drugs were on the hood of his car. The 33-year-old then arrived in Limassol, where he first went outside a hotel. where the 32-year-old was and the 50-year-old suspect, who, according to the facts, signalled them to follow him.

After arriving at a parking lot of another beach hotel, during the meeting, the 33-year-old carried a suitcase from his vehicle and placed it in the 32-year-old's car. After the three suspects left the scene – the 33-year-old in his car, the 32-year-old in her own vehicle and the 50-year-old on a motorcycle – the members of the YKAN immediately intercepted them and checked them.

During the search, the 32-year-old's car found a suitcase containing five packages of cocaine with a gross weight of 5kg and 770 grams, as well as 5 packages of cannabis with a gross weight of five kilograms and 650 grams. The 32-year-old was therefore caught red-handed. In addition, a mobile phone and the sum of €70 were found in her possession, which were confiscated as evidence for further examinations.

The 50-year-old was found in possession of two mobile phones and the amount of €1,845, while the 33-year-old was found two mobile phones and the amount of €225. These too were withheld as evidence for further investigation.

This was followed by searches of premises belonging to the 33-year-old in Nicosia district. In one of them, seven packages of cannabis with a total weight of 7 kg were found, while in a second premises five bags of cannabis with a total weight of 140 grams were found. At the 32-year-old's residence, during a search, a quantity of cannabis with a gross weight of 13 grams was found.

Questioned verbally, the 32-year-old said she went to the hotel spot after being told by her employer (50-year-old) to go there to carry something. The three suspects, after being taken to the offices of YKAN Limassol, were interrogated and did not answer the investigators' questions.

Another 36 statements are expected to be taken in the case and investigations will be carried out in the districts of Limassol and Nicosia. Arrest warrants were issued against the three suspects for conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of drugs, possession of drugs with intent to supply to third parties, supply of drugs, and money laundering.

During the whole operation of YKAN, after the interception of the vehicles and the searches that followed, five kilos and 650 grams of cocaine and 12 kilos and 803 grams of cannabis were seized.
